Lionel Gates was drafted by the Buffalo Bills of the 2005 NFL Draft. He played college football at Louisville. Gates attended Terry Parker High School and was awarded four varsity letters each in football and track. In football, he was chosen twice for the All-Northeast Florida team and was named one tof the top Senior Football Players in the state of Florida by FOX.com. Gates attended University of Louisville, where he split carries with Eric Shelton and finished his college career with 310 rushing attempts for 1,475 yards and 20 rushing touchdowns, 40 receptions for 469 yards and 2 receiving touchdowns, and 6 kickoff returns for 92 yards .

 

2003 -- Junior Season: Led team in rushing (817) and touchdowns (11) ... rushed for 817 yards and caught 25 passes for 368 yards ... ranked eighth in Conference USA in rushing ... averaged 5.8 yards a carry and 14.7 a reception ... ran for 128 yards and a career-long 88-yard touchdown run versus Miami ... carried 14 times for 89 yards versus Cincinnati ... carried a career-high 23 times for 140-yards and four touchdowns against Houston ... his four touchdowns were tied for the fifth-most in a game ... ran 14 times for 48 yards and a touchdown against Memphis and added 54 yards and a score at TCU ... caught nine passes for 134 yards against TCU -- a school record for receiving yards by a running back ... rushed for 88 yards, including a 67-yard touchdown run against USF ... carried 13 times for 75 yards and a score at Kentucky.2002 -- Sophomore Season: Got the starting nod in each of the first two games but played a limited role until the UAB game when he rushed for a season-high 65 yards and one score ... ranked fourth on the squad with 209 yards and a touchdown on 72 carries ... also chipped in with four receptions for 29 yards ... participated in 12 games.

2001 -- Red-shirt Freshman Season: Slated to redshirt but was pressed into duty against Memphis and responded with 68 yards on 16 carries and his first touchdown in a Cardinal uniform ... the following week, after spending 36 hours in a local hospital with tonsillitis, he was the Cards' top rusher with 10 carries for 22 yards against Colorado State ... suffered a season-ending shoulder injury against Southern Miss.

2000-- Freshman Season: Didn't see game action.

Parker High School: Rushed for better than 1,700 yards as a senior with 17 touchdowns ... helped Parker to an appearance in the Florida state playoffs as a senior ... named to the Florida Times-Union Super 24 ... third-team All-First Coast honoree by FTU ... 2000 Jacksonville Quarterback Club Player of the Year ... rushed for 1,350 yards with 14 touchdowns as a junior ... back-to-back all Northeast Florida second team honoree as a sophomore and junior ... rushed for more than 1,200 yards as a sophomore ... named one of the top seniors in the state of Florida by FoxSports.com ... four-year letterman and three-year starter on the gridiron ... cousin of former Clemson linebacker Rahim Abdullah ... earned four letters in track.
